Yes, that book is already on my amazon wishlist for some time. I consider it one of the classic must reads.
The thing about the 9 women quote is that everyone knows it. It's so familiar to a lot of people (also outside software development) and the way you put it is really pointing out the paradigm shift that agile brings.
stop looking at "delivering a full baby after 9 months" and start thinking about "delivering 2 feet after one week, and a leg after that and some toenails that improve the feet, ... ".

Mmm The nine months comes from "the Mythical man month" a great (30 year old) book worth reading. (Really!)
I used this quote all the time. The more I am living in the agile world, the less I am using it.
No, 9 women can not deliver a baby in 1 month, but using agile techniques we can deliver projects faster.
It's like slicing up the different deliveries of the baby. Agh, I know the comparison is not really that good.

"This sounds more like a release plan to me, in which you define a feature set (number of groups of stories) that will be delivered."

Aha, getting closer here on the inside scoop :)

"Part of scrum is based on reducing the time between development of code and the testing of it (hence test driven development) and making sure you have something 'shippable' at the end of every sprint."

Was talking about test driven development: whilst coding constantly testing until it works.

"If delivering a baby would only require thought (=cpu power) it would probably be possible to deliver a baby in one month with nine women. (probably little over a month due to the overhead generated by nine women)."

Ha, so the comparison of the nine women doesn't actually fit as one is comparing apples with bananas. A comparison of 1 man working in my yard for 9 hours vs. 9 men in my yard at 1 hour would've been a better one.

"local bars"

(a)

"However, if you think scrum is widely used on software development projects, I still would like to see the first project manager on a software project who hasn't got a technical background and does a really good job."

Agree :)

Thanks for the comments :)

Aha, getting closer here on the inside scoop

“Part of scrum is based on reducing the time between development of code and the testing of it (hence test driven development) and making sure you have something ‘shippable’ at the end of every sprint.”
